August 24, 2023 — Jeffrey Cane has been sentenced to 22 years in prison following a series of violent incidents that left one officer dead and another injured. He’s also been ordered to pay a fine of $225,375.
August 19th – Mr. Cane was involved in an incident following a police chase that concluded at a local casino. There, he confronted Officer Brad May, taking him hostage. The situation escalated, and May was tragically shot, later succumbing to his injuries. Cane was subsequently apprehended and taken into custody.
Days later, during a routine patrol, Officer J. Clark received a call about suspicious activity involving a vehicle owned by Mr. Cane, a wanted suspect at the time. Clark immediately radioed for backup upon identifying Cane in the driver’s seat. What followed was a high-speed chase, during which Cane fired at pursuing officers. He was eventually subdued.
Booked, charged, and given an arraignment date, Cane would be released on bail. It was moments later, just outside the police department, that another altercation would transpire. Somehow in possession of a weapon, he shot Officer J. Clark, seriously wounding him. Justin Zimmerman, an attorney who witnessed the event, reported the details, highlighting the unexpected presence of a weapon on Cane’s person after his recent arrest.
When Commissioner Willie Roscoe was asked about the weapon, he had this to say “No he shouldn’t have had it.”
On the day of his arraignment, Cane was blindsided by the announcement of an unexpected warrant for attempted capital murder, relating to the shooting of Officer J. Clark. Unprepared for this revelation and seemingly overwhelmed by the gravity of the charge, Cane attempted to flee the courtroom in a sudden burst of desperation. This resulted in a tumultuous scuffle, with two officers receiving blows before he was finally restrained and brought back into custody.
Alongside Attempted Capitol Murder, he faced charges of Felony Contempt, Aggravated Battery, Criminal Possession of firearms of Class 2 and 3, Aggravated Assault, and Fleeing to Elude.
