September 3rd, 2023 – Recent events in Los Santos have resulted in Rick Long’s arrest due to a series of criminal allegations. While some might know him for verbally harassing women, his recent detention is attributed to more significant infractions, most notably altercations with law enforcement. Alongside the charges, questions surrounding his mental fitness raise the possibility of him being placed in a mental health facility for long-term care.
Following his arrest, Mr. Long was held in custody at Bolingbroke, awaiting his arraignment. However, just hours before his court appearance, he was found in possession of a firearm. The source of this weapon remains undisclosed by the authorities, though they assure us the method of acquisition has been addressed. This discovery led to an altercation with officers, resulting in him accruing three counts of attempted capital murder.
During his arraignment, Mr. Long’s reactions were notably mixed. On one hand, he frequently seemed disoriented, interjecting with comments such as “Where am I?”, “Huh?”, and “What is that?”. On the other, when the discussion shifted to the possibility of residency at a mental health facility, he became notably more assertive, with exclamations like “I object!”. His assertiveness intensified as he expressed strong displeasure towards the judge when things didn’t go in his favor.
Mr. Long’s recent actions have cast a spotlight on potential cognitive issues. Nevertheless, the tenet of justice demands that the law be applied uniformly. Irrespective of whether his disruptions were genuine or an act, he found himself facing eight additional charges of felony contempt of court. Some might argue these charges seem excessive given his age and observed behavior. In light of these concerns, the court ordered a psychiatric assessment, to be performed within 72 hours.
This evaluation aims to assess an individual’s mental capacity to participate in a trial, upholding the integrity of the legal process. If deemed mentally unfit, they might not grasp the charges or the proceedings, compromising their ability to defend themselves. Additionally, the rare insanity defense relies on such assessments. If found legally insane at the time of the alleged crime, they could be exempt from criminal responsibility.
At the conclusion of his arraignment, Mr. Long dramatically mimicked the symptoms of a heart attack. Interestingly, this wasn’t the first instance of such behavior; sources indicate he has resorted to this tactic before. He is presently being held at Bolingbroke awaiting both his trial and psychiatric evaluation.
